Floating Floor Construction for Studios
Why Float the Floor?
A floating floor decouples the studio from the building structure, preventing impact noise and vibration transmission. Most effective isolation upgrade for ground-floor studios.
Mass-Spring-Mass Design
The top layer sits on resilient isolators above the structural floor. Lower resonant frequency means better bass isolation. Target 8-12 Hz for music studios.
Isolator Types
- Rubber: Regupol — cost-effective, 8-15 Hz
- Springs: Steel coil — lowest (5-8 Hz), expensive
- Mineral wool: High-density — budget, 12-20 Hz
Build Sequence
Install perimeter foam strip. Place isolators on 600mm grid. Lay two layers of 18mm plywood (glued and screwed). Add finish flooring.
Common Mistakes
Bridging the isolation gap with pipes, cables, or HVAC ducts defeats the system. All services need flexible connections at the boundary.
