Room Mode Calculator: Fix Bass Problems
Understanding Room Modes
Room modes are resonant frequencies caused by sound reflecting between parallel surfaces. They create peaks and nulls that distort bass response.
The Math
Axial modes are the strongest. Calculate: f = 171.5 / L (meters) or f = 1130 / (2 x L) (feet).
Three Types
- Axial: Two surfaces — most problematic
- Tangential: Four surfaces — half the energy
- Oblique: Six surfaces — quarter the energy
Using a Calculator
Enter room dimensions and find all modal frequencies below 300 Hz. Look for clustering near the same frequency.
Solutions
Bass Traps
Place broadband absorbers in corners. Mineral wool panels 4-6 inches thick handle modes down to 40 Hz.
Speaker Placement
Move speakers from walls. The rule of thirds avoids most modal peaks and nulls.
