DIY Studio Isolation Booth: Build Guide
Why Build Your Own Booth?
Commercial vocal booths cost ,000-,000. A DIY build using mass-loaded vinyl, acoustic foam, and basic framing lumber can achieve 80% of the performance for under 00. The key is understanding the mass-air-mass principle.
Design Principles
Effective isolation requires decoupled walls with mass on each side and air or absorptive material in between. A room-within-a-room approach means the inner walls never touch the outer walls, preventing vibration transfer.
Materials List
- Mass-loaded vinyl (MLV), 1 lb/sqft: 50 for 4x25 ft roll
- Rockwool Safe and Sound insulation: 0 per bag
- 5/8 inch drywall: 5 per sheet
- Resilient channel or green glue: 0
- Acoustic sealant: 0 per tube
Construction Steps
Build a frame using 2x4 studs spaced 16 inches on center. Attach MLV to the outer face with construction adhesive. Fill the cavity with Rockwool. Hang drywall on resilient channels with green glue between layers. Seal every gap with acoustic caulk.
Ventilation
A sealed booth becomes stuffy within 10 minutes. Install a baffled ventilation box: two offset PVC pipes lined with acoustic foam allow air flow while blocking sound transmission. Add a quiet inline fan rated under 1 sone.
