Active vs Passive Studio Monitors
The Core Difference
Active monitors have built-in amplifiers matched to each driver. Passive monitors require external amplification. The choice affects your chain, budget, and results.
Active Monitors
Advantages
- Factory-matched amp to drivers
- Built-in crossover for correct frequency splitting
- Bi-amped or tri-amped per driver
- Just connect your interface output
Trade-offs
Heavier cabinets. Amp failure means full monitor service. No amplifier upgrade path.
Passive Monitors
Advantages
- Lighter — amps are external
- Swap amplifiers without replacing speakers
- Drive multiple pairs from one amp
Trade-offs
Needs quality amplifier (adds cost). Impedance matching is your responsibility. Poor matches sound worse than equivalent active designs.
Recommendation
For most studios, active monitors deliver better results with less complexity. Reserve passive for large studios with dedicated amp racks.
