Studio Monitor Isolation Pads: Do They Work?

By Marcus Chen ·

The Physics of Monitor Isolation

When a speaker sits directly on a desk, vibrations transfer into the surface, creating resonances that color the sound. Isolation pads decouple the speaker using compliant materials.

Types of Isolation

Foam Pads

High-density acoustic foam is affordable. Auralex MoPADs use angled foam to isolate and tilt. They work well for mid/high frequencies but have limited effect below 80Hz.

Spring-Based Isolators

IsoAcoustics ISO series use tuned springs for low resonance frequencies, providing genuine isolation including bass.

Mass-Loaded Platforms

Heavy platforms with sorbothane feet combine mass and compliance for broadband isolation. Effective but bulky.

Measuring the Difference

Use a measurement mic to compare frequency response with and without isolation. Typically 3-6dB reduction in the 40-120Hz range where desk resonances occur.

Verdict

Isolation pads work. On a solid desk the improvement is subtle. On a lightweight or resonant surface, the difference is dramatic.
