Wired vs Wireless Audio Latency
Understanding Audio Latency
Audio latency is the delay between a signal being sent and heard. For casual listening, latency under 100ms is imperceptible. For music production, video editing, or gaming, even 20ms of delay can be distracting and disrupt timing.
Bluetooth Latency Benchmarks
Standard Bluetooth (SBC codec) has latency of 150-250ms. Qualcomm aptX Low Latency reduces this to 32-40ms, while aptX Adaptive dynamically adjusts between 50-80ms depending on link quality. Apple's AirPods use a proprietary codec achieving roughly 100ms on iOS devices.
Wired Connection Advantages
Analog wired connections have essentially zero latency — the electrical signal travels at near light speed. USB audio interfaces add 1-5ms of buffer latency. For professional audio work, wired remains the gold standard with no compression artifacts.
Use Case Recommendations
- Music production: Wired only — any latency disrupts real-time monitoring
- Video editing: Wired or aptX Low Latency Bluetooth
- Gaming: 2.4GHz wireless dongles (5-20ms) or wired
- Casual listening: Any Bluetooth codec is fine
- Video calls: Standard Bluetooth works — apps compensate for delay
The Future: LE Audio
Bluetooth LE Audio with the LC3 codec promises lower latency (under 20ms in ideal conditions) and better quality at lower bitrates. Devices supporting Bluetooth 5.3+ are starting to ship with LE Audio support, potentially closing the gap with wired connections for most consumer use cases.
