MIDI 2.0 Overview: What Changed

By Emma Davis ·

MIDI 2.0 at a Glance

MIDI 2.0 is the first major protocol update since 1983. It adds bidirectional communication, higher resolution, and property exchange while staying backward-compatible.

Key Improvements

32-bit Resolution

MIDI 1.0 used 7-bit (0-127). MIDI 2.0 uses 32-bit — over 4 billion levels. Velocity curves become genuinely expressive.

Protocol Negotiation

Devices discover capabilities on connection. A controller can detect synth features and enable expression automatically.

Property Exchange

Devices share patch names, parameters, and state. Your DAW displays synth presets without a librarian app.

MPE Integration

Per-note pitch, timbre, and pressure are now first-class messages. Existing MPE controllers work natively with MIDI 2.0 synths.
