Mix Bus Compression Tips for Beginners
What Is Mix Bus Compression?
Mix bus compression applies gentle dynamic control to your entire stereo mix. It glues the mix together, adds punch, and controls peaks before mastering.
Starting Settings
- Ratio: 1.5:1 to 2:1
- Attack: 10-30 ms (lets transients through)
- Release: Auto or 100-300 ms
- Threshold: 1-3 dB gain reduction on peaks
- Makeup gain: Match bypassed level
Popular Compressors
SSL G-Master
The gold standard. Auto-release, distinctive glue character. Available as hardware and plugins.
API 2500
Thrust control and multiple knee settings. Soft knee at 2:1 with medium attack is a classic start.
Common Mistakes
- Too much GR: >3 dB squashes dynamics
- Fast attack: <5 ms kills drum transients
- Adding late: Insert early and mix into it
- Bad gain staging: Ensure -6 to -3 dB headroom
Parallel Technique
Send to aggressive parallel compressor (4:1, 3-5 dB GR). Blend 10-20% with dry for density without losing transients.
When to Skip
If the mix already sounds cohesive, compression may harm more than help. Classical and jazz often benefit from minimal bus processing.
