Mix Bus Compression: Settings That Work
Purpose of Mix Bus Compression
Mix bus compression glues tracks together, adding cohesion and energy. It is about unity, not loudness.
Starting Settings
- Ratio: 1.5:1 to 2:1
- Attack: 10-30ms (let transients through)
- Release: 100-300ms or auto
- Threshold: 1-3dB gain reduction on peaks
- Makeup gain: Match bypassed level
Compressor Types
VCA (SSL-style)
Clean, transparent. SSL G-Bus is the standard. Great for pop, rock, electronic.
Vari-Mu (Fairchild/Manley)
Warm, musical, adds color. Ideal for jazz, folk, singer-songwriter.
Optical (LA-2A style)
Smooth, natural, program-dependent. Best for ballads and acoustic music.
Common Mistakes
Too much ratio (4:1+) squashes dynamics. Too fast attack kills transients. More than 3-4dB reduction causes pumping.
Parallel Compression
Blend heavily compressed signal with dry mix. Preserves transients while adding body. Use 10-20% wet blend.
