Spatial Audio Mixing Tips for Immersive Sound
The Rise of Spatial Audio
Spatial audio has moved from cinema to consumer headphones. Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music all support Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio.
Core Concepts
Object-Based vs Channel-Based
Traditional surround uses fixed channels. Spatial audio uses audio objects with metadata describing their 3D position. The renderer adapts to any speaker or headphone setup.
Height Channels
The biggest difference is height. Objects placed above the listener create a dome of sound for ambience and creative panning.
Mixing Best Practices
- Start in stereo: Get the balance right first
- Use the bed wisely: 7.1.2 bed for static elements, objects for moving sounds
- Avoid overcrowding: More positions does not mean filling every position
- Check binaural render: Most listeners use headphones
Tools
Dolby Atmos Production Suite works with Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and Studio One. For games, FMOD and Wwise offer native spatial audio middleware.
