Creating Cinematic Impacts With Layering
Anatomy of a Cinematic Impact
A professional cinematic impact is a layered stack covering the full frequency spectrum. Any trailer hit contains 4-6 layers creating the illusion of massive scale.
Four Essential Layers
1. Sub (20-80 Hz)
Clean sine wave or low-end thump. 40-60 Hz with sharp attack (5-10 ms) and 1-2 second decay. Keep mono for phase coherence.
2. Mid Body (80-500 Hz)
Taiko drums, reversed piano, metallic hits. Compress 4:1 with fast attack for controlled sustain.
3. High Detail (500 Hz-5 kHz)
Metal scrapes, glass breaking, noise bursts. The transient that cuts through. Loudest in first 50 ms.
4. Air (5-20 kHz)
Filtered noise, cymbal washes. High-shelf boost at 10 kHz for enormous feel.
Processing
- Transient shaping: Boost attack per layer, bus compress to glue
- Saturation: Tape/tube on mid body for harmonics
- Reverb: Large hall, pre-delay 20-40 ms
- Side-chain: Duck mid when sub hits
Stagger Technique
Offset layers by 5-15 ms. Sub arriving first, then high detail — mimics how physical impacts propagate.
