Foley Recording: Essential Techniques
What Is Foley?
Foley creates synchronized sound effects in post-production by performing actions while watching picture. It covers footsteps, cloth movement, prop handling — any physical interaction that needs to sound authentic.
Essential Surfaces
- Concrete: Hard footsteps (offices, streets)
- Wood: Warm indoor footsteps
- Gravel tray: Outdoor paths
- Carpet: Muffled, soft footsteps
- Tile: Bathrooms and kitchens
Microphone Setup
Close Mic
Small-diaphragm condenser (Schoeps CMC6 or AKG C451) at 1-3 feet. Primary mic for detail.
Room Mic
Stereo pair (ORTF or spaced omnis) at 8-15 feet. Adds depth when blended subtly.
Footstep Technique
Match the character's gait — weight, speed, attitude. Tired characters drag, confident ones strike firmly. Wear matching shoes. Record heel strikes, toe-offs, and scuffs as separate passes for editorial control.
Cloth and Props
Use fabrics matching the wardrobe: leather, denim, silk, nylon. Hold close to mic and move in sync. For props, collect everyday objects — keys, glasses, bottles. The right prop sells a scene better than any synth effect.
Recording Tips
- Monitor with closed-back headphones
- Record at 96 kHz for pitch flexibility
- Announce each take verbally
- Physically act out the scene — body language affects sound
